Go here to get the study guide for the Energy Issues of the Future Test. The test is on Friday, March 12th.
Feb. 19 - Podcasts
To take a look and/or listen to some related podcasts open iTunes, go to the iTunes store and search for "the Green Room." Go to this section of iTunes and you'll find a variety of environmental related resources. You can download for free a number of audio and video podcasts to gain some inspiration for your podcast.
Go to our class ning site and share what you listened to or saw on one of those podcasts.

Feb. 12 - Eating Kangaroos and Geoengineering
Based on our reading of Ch. 5 from Superfreakonomics, we answered the following:
(pg. 167) - What is a "locavore"? What arguments do locavores make? What arguments can you make against them?
(pg. 171) - What is an externality? How do externalities relate to greenhouse gas emissions?
(pg. 175) - How does The Club prevent stolen cars? How does LoJack prevent stolen cars?
Finally, why can eating kangaroo save polar bears?
In conjunction with the reading, we watched this video.
We also learned about geoengineering. The presentation can be found here, as the second part of a presentation on carbon sequestration and geoengineering.

Feb. 10 - Clean Coal and Carbon Sequestration
Read the article about clean coal. Also, take a look at some of the coal ads mentioned in the article.
Answer the following:
- What is the Obama administrations doing in terms of coal in the U.S.'s energy future and clean coal?
- What is an argument made by the coal industry?
- What is an argument made by environmentalists?
- Pick out and describe errors in each.
In class Mr. Schneiter gave a presentation on carbon sequestration. The presentation can be found online.
A couple of basic questions were answered:
- What is carbon sequestration?
- Why might carbon sequestration be part of the solution to climate change?
Below are copies of a handout from the presentation.

Feb. 5 - Carbon Offsetting
Begin class by taking a look at the information on the following website: http://www.carbonfund.org/. Particularly, take a look at the section on "How It Works" and the Carbon Calculators.
Look at the dollar amounts at what it takes to offset your driving, flying, home, wedding or party, etc.
What are some observations you can make?
What are some things that surprise you?
Why would people pay money to this website for their activities?
Take a look at this ad:
What are they using to try to sell you a car?

Dec. 9 - Energy Use
Below are some links to information about the types of energy used in the United States, energy use (per capita) worldwide by country, and CO2 emissions worldwide by country (per capita). Explore the information and consider the following questions:
- What energy sources do we rely on in the United States?
- What are surprising or interesting observations you made about energy use and CO2 emissions?
- What kinds of correlations did you make note of in regards to geographical distribution of energy use and CO2 emisssions?
Types of energy use in the U.S.

Dec. 4 - Interactive Map on Oil Imports (Historical)
Take a look at this interactive map which shows you where the U.S. gets its oil from a historical perspective, from 1973 to the present.
Here's the link: http://move.rmi.org/features/oilmap.html
Think about, what are implications for the United States when it comes to how we get our oil. What is that oil used for? What happens if one of those supply chains is broken or interrupted?

Dec. 2 - World Map
Begin class by taking a look at the world maps found at this CNN link.
Also, take a look at the Worldometers site, a site constantly updating with information about the world.
First, look at the 6 maps of "Earnings in dollars." The maps show the distribution of wealth throughout the world. Then, look at the 8 maps of "The Atlas of the Real World" and pay particular attention to Greenhouse Gases and Coal Power.
Answer the following:
What are some of the observations you make from the maps?
Is there a correlation between income and greenhouse gas emissions?
Is there anything that surprised you?
What are questions that are raised after looking at the maps?

Nov. 6 - Neoliberal globalists
We read a couple of articles in class and answered the following:
- How do these articles demonstrate the interconnectedness of globality (cultural, political, etc.)?
- According to a neoliberal globalist, what promise is evident for the world, as demonstrated in these articles?
If working from home, I don't have links to the above articles but the following three articles are all closely related and can offer you the same information:
What iPods Can Do for China
Tweeting Their Way to Freedom
China's Leaders Have a New Watchdog: The Internet
Also, we finished the definition of globalization organizer, there is a blank organizer from Nov. 4 and below are the finished notes.
